Water Supply São Tomé - EMAE
Ensure sustainable access and strengthen public health and resilience in São Tomé and Príncipe
The São Tomé and Surrounding Areas Drinking Water Supply Project, to be implemented by EMAE between 2024 and 2028, represents a crucial investment of €63 million to modernise and expand the water system in the capital and the neighbouring districts of Mé-Zóchi and Lobata. The intervention includes the expansion of the Treatment Plant, new reservoirs, reinforcement of the adduction pipes, distribution networks and thousands of household connections. The project has a direct impact on public health, poverty reduction and improvement of QUIBB indicators, contributing to SDGs 3, 6, 11 and 13 and ensuring reliable and sustainable drinking water for more than half of the country's population. This is a structural operation that transforms the country's high water potential into well-being, economic development and climate resilience.
In financial terms, the project currently has €15 million secured: €8.44 million from the EIB and €6.56 million from the European Union. A further €48 million is under negotiation, constituting the main funding gap needed to enable the full implementation of the works. This gap represents a concrete opportunity for multilateral and bilateral partners and institutional investors to contribute to one of the country's most transformative social and environmental projects. Mobilising these resources will enable the financing to be fully secured, accelerate implementation and consolidate water supply as an essential pillar of sustainable development in São Tomé and Príncipe.
