Construction of a port in Ponta Mina

Strengthen connectivity, reduce logistical costs and increase Príncipe’s resilience

The Port of Ponta da Mina – Blue Infrastructure for Connectivity and Resilience in Príncipe is a structural investment that will transform maritime mobility, reduce logistics costs and ensure security of supply in the Autonomous Region of Príncipe. Designed to replace the current Santo António pier – now saturated, degraded and unable to accommodate medium-sized ships – the new deep-water port of Ponta Mina responds to an urgent need in the country, offering modern, resilient infrastructure that is fully aligned with the National Blue Economy Strategy. The project, located in Príncipe's main logistics zone, will allow the safe berthing of vessels up to 60 metres long and with a draught of 4 metres, ensuring essential connectivity between the islands, strengthening food security and creating favourable conditions for domestic and foreign trade. With an estimated investment of €7.05 million (PNIEA / TYPSA–COWI studies 2012–2013) — updated to around USD 50 million in 2025 — the port is the centrepiece of the Cabotage Master Plan, functioning as a logistics platform integrated with tourism, agriculture and fishing. The new infrastructure will reduce transport costs by 30–40%, ensure safe port operations and stimulate a more competitive economic environment in Príncipe. This is a critical project of national interest, with a direct impact on territorial resilience, inter-island connectivity and the economic sustainability of the region, fully aligned with the ENDS 2026–2040 vision.
