National Programme for the Development of Organic Agricultural Value Chains (Production, Irrigation and Export)
100% organic agriculture in São Tomé and Príncipe
STP 100º BIO – Sustainable Agriculture for the Future is a transformative project that puts São Tomé and Príncipe on track to become an African benchmark in 100% organic agriculture by 2040. The initiative promotes the expansion of certified organic production, sustainable solar-powered irrigation, and the adoption of advanced agricultural technology, while strengthening climate resilience, food security, and producer incomes. Structured around five integrated components — organic production, smart irrigation, export chains, environmental sustainability and green finance — the programme creates production clusters, processing units, bio-input centres and digital certification systems, supported by partners such as FAO, UNDP, AfDB, EU and UNIDO.
With a total investment of USD 44 million, financed through a blended finance model that mobilises the public sector, multilateral partners and private investment, STP 100º BIO presents solid financial indicators: ROI of 22%, IRR of 13–15%, payback of 6–7 years and positive NPV of USD 8.5 million. The expected impacts are decisive: 25,000 ha certified by 2030, 5,000 ha irrigated with solar energy, doubling of exports and a 30% reduction in agricultural emissions. This is a structuring initiative that combines innovation, sustainability and socio-economic impact, ensuring modern, competitive and environmentally responsible agriculture for the future of São Tomé and Príncipe.
