Requalification of coastal areas and beaches
Strengthening of environmental resilience in São Tomé and Príncipe
The Costa Viva Project – Sustainable Redevelopment of the Coastal Areas of São Tomé and Príncipe is an integrated initiative that transforms the country's main beaches and viewpoints into modern, safe and resilient spaces, while promoting environmental conservation and boosting tourism. Covering 12 priority areas — including the beaches of Lagoa Azul, Namorados, Tamarinos, Governador, Micondó, Piscina, Cabana, Café and Granja, as well as the viewpoints of Água Izé, Granja and Bone de Joquey — the project combines green solutions with essential coastal infrastructure to protect fragile ecosystems, strengthen coastal resilience and improve beach management. The first phase, currently funded by WACA/PNIEA, represents an investment of €6.04 million and focuses on the most urgent interventions, while the full redevelopment of the 12 areas is estimated at €32 million, creating a wide range of opportunities for donors, PPPs and private investors.
With a direct impact on tourism, the environment and the blue economy, Costa Viva is positioned as an anchor project for sustainable development, capable of increasing annual visitor numbers by 20-30%, boosting local businesses (kiosks, restaurants, tourist services) and creating new employment opportunities and community concessions. Structured as a territorial transformation initiative, the project strengthens the competitiveness of São Tomé and Príncipe as a blue tourism destination in the Gulf of Guinea, promoting economic inclusion, sustainable coastal management and lasting social and environmental benefits. In short, Costa Viva is a strategic green investment platform that protects coastal areas while generating real economic value for communities and the country.
